Our Naturescapes
Habitat fragmentation, climate change, and urbanization are causing a biodiversity crisis worldwide, making gardens and natural spaces more important than ever. We believe that the power to make a difference lies with property owners making good land stewardship decisions.
We also know that property owners are busier than ever and any property decision they make has to benefit them as well- that’s where we come in.
Our naturescape designs create a sense of nature, are pleasing to the eye, and support the environment all while requiring less input & maintenance compared to traditionally designed spaces.
Our designs:
-Use artistic flair to mimic natural plant communities
-Use less mulch
-Require no fertilizers
-Need less water (after the first year)
-Use young plants to reduce cost to the landowner
-Solve ecological problems
Meet the designer
Hi! I’m Cara, nature nerd turned ecological business owner. While I’ve always loved all things outdoors (seriously though..I used to sneak toads into the house because they’re so stinkin’ cute…sorry mom) I truly found my calling once I learned how to bring the beauty and functionality of the natural world into home/cottage settings using naturalistic planting design techniques.
I’m passionate about connecting people with nature through functional designs inspired by natural plant communities and have 15 years of experience in ecological restoration, environmental education, and project management. I’ve designed and installed over 25 naturescapes -native plant gardens, tallgrass prairies, mini forests, naturalized shorelines, and more in Haliburton, Ontario and surrounding areas.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Marine & Freshwater Biology, and a post-graduate certificate in Ecosystem Restoration. I have certifications in Ecological Land Classification (ELC), and Ontario Benthic Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) and have completed courses and masterclasses on naturalized planting design, shoreline restoration, freshwater fish identification, plant ID…you name it.
I escaped city life and moved to Ontario’s cottage country- Haliburton County, with my husband, two kids, golden retriever, and like a hundred fish.
